Players asking how many acts are in Diablo 4 usually want more than a number: they want to know how the campaign is organized, how much time it demands, and whether the early freedom changes the best way to play. The base story has six numbered acts, plus a prologue and an epilogue. Those extra sections matter narratively, but they are not counted as acts. While preparing your Diablo 4 gear, it also helps to understand that the campaign is not designed as six identical chapters.

The Six Acts at a Glance

Acts I, II, and III form the flexible opening section. Players can approach these story branches in different orders, traveling through several regions while the main conflict develops. This makes the beginning feel more like an open-world journey than a fixed sequence of missions.

◆ Act I establishes the central threat and the bleak tone of Sanctuary.

◆ Act II expands the conflict through another region and adds greater religious and political tension.

◆ Act III connects personal character stories with the wider danger facing the world.

◆ Act IV brings the separate early threads together and acts as the campaign's main turning point.

◆ Acts V and VI narrow the focus, moving through the major confrontations and toward the base story's ending.

The numbered acts are not equal in size. The first three usually take longer because they include broader travel, exploration, and optional activities. Act IV is more direct, while the final two acts put greater pressure on the main objectives.

How the Flexible Opening Affects Progression

The freedom to choose among the first three acts is useful, but it can also make the campaign feel less clearly paced. Players who stop for side quests, strongholds, dungeons, and regional exploration may spend much longer in the opening portion than someone following only the critical path.

For a first character, that slower route is often worthwhile. The early acts introduce the world, major characters, and class fundamentals without requiring an immediate focus on advanced progression. The main mistake is treating every optional activity as mandatory before moving the story forward. Exploration is valuable, but excessive detours can make the narrative lose momentum.

How Long Should You Expect?

There is no single campaign time that fits every player. A focused run through the main objectives is considerably shorter than a playthrough that includes regional tasks and frequent exploration. Acts I through III usually absorb the most time because of their wider routes and open structure.

Players planning future seasonal characters should finish the campaign at least once. After that, repeating the full story is not always the most efficient use of time, especially when the goal is to reach seasonal activities quickly. New players, however, generally gain more from experiencing all six acts than from rushing past the story on their first character.

What the Recent Paladin Notes Mean

The Paladin balance direction described in the 3.1 testing notes favors stronger active skills, steadier defenses, and less downtime. Zenith received higher damage on its opening and final hits. Shield Charge gained more base damage, a shorter cooldown, and improved armor during the charge. Heaven's Fury received a sizable cooldown reduction, while Zealot Oath improved its damage per echo.

These changes point toward a more active front-line style. Shield Charge is especially meaningful for campaign play because better movement and more frequent use can improve the rhythm of ordinary fights, not just major encounters. The Shield of Retribution version of Blessed Shield went in the opposite direction, with lower Thorns damage, so not every setup was raised equally.

As of August 8, 2026, patch 3.1.2 is the latest listed live patch, released July 28. Its Paladin note addresses a Holy damage display issue in the Stats and Materials tab. The larger numerical changes belong to the 3.1 testing discussion, so players should verify current skill values in-game before rebuilding a character.

The direct answer remains six numbered acts, supported by a prologue and epilogue. Play the opening acts in the order that suits your exploration style, finish the campaign once before focusing on seasonal efficiency, and treat the Paladin numbers as version-sensitive when choosing cheap Diablo IV Items.
